Base Oils - for use to mix with Essential Oils

Sadie's collection of base oils includes something for everyone. We've separated the oils alphabetically to enable you to browse more easily. If you know what you're looking for, you can also go right there and order your base oil right away. We sell our oils in amber glass bottles. At this time we do not use childproof lids, so again we recommend caution and common sense when storing these products. They will last indefinitely stored upright in a cool, dark place.

Effective January 2004, we started dispensing all our vegetable, nut, essential and fragrance oils by weight, not by fluid ounces. This seems to be the norm now within our industry.

Two oils of the same viscosity, supplied by different oil companies can have radically different formulations, and thus have significantly different weights ... and oils have different viscosities, so some bottles may appear to not be full.

All our vegetable/nut oils are all natural and come from plants, nuts, etc. The color of each batch may differ from a previous batch and may also differ due to different supplier, country of origin or growing conditions. Please don't assume that because the oil you receive today is slightly different in color from one you previously received that we sent you the wrong oil or the bottle is mislabeled.

ALL OUR VEGETABLE/NUT OILS ARE COLD PRESSED

General Precautions

Essential oils are very concentrated. Their safe use requires they be treated with care and respect. The user should be knowledgeable about their properties and actions before any use. Most personal applications require drops rather than ounces.

Always read and follow all label warnings and cautions.
Keep oils tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
Never ingest essential oils.
Don't use undiluted oils on your skin (Dilute with vegetable oils, known as "carrier oils," such as sweet almond oil or apricot kernel oil).
Skin test oils before using. Dilute a small amount and apply to the skin on your inner arm. Do not use if redness or irritation occurs.
Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes.

Avoid use of these oils during pregnancy:
bitter almond, basil, clary sage, clove bud, hyssop, sweet fennel, juniper berry, marjoram, myrrh, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sage, thyme and wintergreen.

These oils can be especially irritating to the skin:
allspice, bitter almond, basil, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, clove bud, sweet fennel, fir needle, lemon, lemongrass, melissa, peppermint, tea tree and wintergreen.
Angelica and all citrus oils make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Do not go out into the sun with these oils on your skin.
Sweet fennel, hyssop, sage and rosemary should not be used by anyone with epilepsy.
People with high blood pressure should avoid hyssop, rosemary, sage and thyme.

PLEASE, remember that essential oils contain the smell, taste and concentrated medicinal properties of the plant itself in a very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added. With that in mind, please respect these oils, as these essential oils are many times more potent that the whole herb itself.

Aromatherapy is both an art and a science. Aromatherapists, armed with a technical understanding of an oil's constituents, artfully blend essential oils to produce new aromas. The results of aromatherapy are very individual. While there is general agreement about the actions of certain oils, aromatherapy texts vary in their descriptions of the properties and characteristics of an essential oil. No two persons are affected by the same essential oil in exactly the same way. Even the same person can be affected differently by the same oil depending on surroundings, time of day or mood.

Essential oils are the highly concentrated, volatile, aromatic essences of plants. Scientists agree that essential oils may perform more than one function in living plants. In some cases they seem to be a part of the plant's immune system. In other cases they may simply be end-products of metabolism. Essential oils contain hundreds of organic constituents, including hormones, vitamins and other natural elements that work on many levels. They are 75 to 100 times more concentrated than the oils in dried herbs. Please take time to learn about them before you use them. If you are in doubt, consult with your physician or a professional who is well versed in the science of aromatherapy.
